Team FAQs

When does registration begin?

Registration for the 2026 summer season opened on March 1, 2026.

No refunds for withdrawals will be issued after May 1, 2026. Register by May 1 to receive Tuckahoe Dive Team spirit wear that is included in registration.

When does dive season start and end?

Dive season typically begins the week of Memorial Day until the end of July with daily weekday practices. Dive meets begin in late June through July.

Can my child participate in Tuckahoe Dive Team, Swim Team and/or Tennis Team?

Yes! We have a number of divers who are on multiple Tuckahoe teams! See our practice schedule to see how these team practices can align.

Are there minimum requirements to join the dive team?

We welcome divers – even those with no experience. We have excellent coaches that help divers at all levels. We want to make this a fun experience for the kids!

General requirements for joining the summer Tuckahoe Dive Team are as follows:

  • Diver must be a member of Tuckahoe Recreation Club in good standing.
  • Diver must be between the ages of 7-18 as of June 1. Exceptions may apply for ages 5-6. If your child is ages 5-6, please contact the Tuckahoe Dive Team Reps for an assessment with a coach prior to registration. Your 5-6 year old must show the ability to:
    • Readily jump off the diving board without fear
    • Show a desire to learn a front dive
    • Be able to quickly swim to the side of the pool, so as not to slow down practice for the kids 7+
    • Sustain 30-minutes of instruction and follow directions that are specific to diving
    • Have emotional and body control that does not change the pace of the practice or require additional coach attention that would take away from other divers 7+
  • Diver must sign an NVSL waiver found during online registration BEFORE attending any practice.
  • Diver must be able to swim ~15 yards unassisted.
  • Diver must be unafraid of deep water and able to jump into the pool from a raised level/ diving board.
  • Diver must be able to participate in a group setting and show an interest in learning how to dive.

**New Summer 2026 - Flying Cubs dive for those 6 and under! General requirements for Flying Cubs that differ from Flying Tigers include:

  • Diver must be able to swim the length of the dive well
  • Diver must be able to get out of the pool on their own
  • Diver DOES NOT need to be able to go off the diving board

What suit should divers wear?

For practice, divers are expected to wear proper dive training attire such as a one-piece swimsuit, speedo briefs or jammers. No swim trunks, wet shirts/suits, bikinis.

Divers should wear a Tuckahoe team (dive or swim) swimsuit or solid black swimsuit for A Meets. Details for Summer 2026 dive team swimsuits will be communicated once the styles are finalized.

Do all divers need a cap?

No. Caps are not recommended.

How long is morning dive practice?

To accommodate divers who participate in multiple activities at Tuckahoe, morning practice times are available 8:45 - 11:15am. However, the following practice time duration applies per age group:

  • Ages 8 & Under should plan to practice 30-45 minutes
  • Ages 9 - 11 should plan to practice 45-60 minutes
  • Ages 12 & Up should plan to practice 45-60 minutes

Does an adult need to remain at Tuckahoe during practice?

We do not have a set rule regarding dropping off a child at practice but it is not uncommon for our youngest divers to have an issue during practice that requires parental help. Our coaches and volunteers are not in a position to leave practice to care for a diver in such event. We therefore strongly encourage that all of our 8 and under divers have an adult at Tuckahoe Recreation Club (TRC) that may assist the child should they be unable to complete practice.

If you intend to have another individual stay with your children during practice, please note that Tuckahoe by-laws require all visitors to be members or pay a guest fee each day they visit including dive practice attendance. You will need to make the appropriate arrangements with the TRC front desk staff in advance. For our older divers, in most situations, it is reasonable to “drop off” assuming you intend to return before practice ends.

When is an appropriate time to speak to Coaches?

Questions can be addressed after practice or at other times around the dive well. Coaches are also available to answer questions via email but please recognize that their jobs do not allow them the ability to check email routinely throughout the day. Feel free to communicate with the Dive Team Reps regarding ancillary team issues, not related to coaching or dive development.

Our Coaches and divers work best together when they are able to concentrate on each other during practice. While our coaches like to be available to parents, please do not disturb a coach during practice to ask questions, and please also try to avoid “hovering” over the practice. Anyone not participating in an ongoing practice is asked to stay a reasonable distance away from our dive well so as to not disturb the coaching staff or distract the divers. Only if necessary, our Coaches and Team Reps may ask people to leave the practice area so the divers can concentrate.

What is my volunteer commitment?

NVSL and the Tuckahoe Flying Tigers run on volunteer effort. There are many needs, including data entry, judging, refereeing, table work, announcing, event planning, and serving as the Dive Team Rep. Training is free and available through NVSL. To effectively run the Tuckahoe Flying Tigers Dive season, dive families must fulfill a minimum number of volunteer credits or pay an opt-out fee, which is pre-approved during registration.

What are the Tuckahoe-only Black & Gold and “Black & Old” Meets?

The Black & Gold meet is the Tuckahoe Flying Tigers first meet of the season to kick off summer dive! This is a fun intrasquad (Tuckahoe only) meet for our divers to get a feel for what the meet season is like in a low pressure and fun environment. This is also a fantastic time for new dive families to volunteer and learn about the different dive meet roles. It's a fun opportunity to hang out with dive families to kick off the summer season.

The "Black & Old" meet is our end of season meet where our divers (kids) judge and the family adults dive. Get your cannonballs ready! This is also our end of season party with a potluck dinner and diver awards celebration. Lots of fun to wrap up our Flying Tigers season!

What is the weather policy?

The outdoor dive well and pool remain open when it’s raining but will close if there is thunder and/or lightning. If it's raining too hard, practice may be suspended. If the rain/storm is not letting up, we may cancel practice. At this time we only have plans to use the outdoor pool.

If we have to cancel practice either before it starts or once it has started, we will send out an e-mail, so please check your email during inclement weather. Sometimes it will obviously be at the last minute. In addition, we plan to not only make sure that pool management is included in our cancellation e-mail, but we will also give the front desk a call to inform them directly.
