What Happens at a Dive Meet?

For each age group, there is a specified number of dives each diver will have to perform during Tuesday A meets. The coaches will work with the divers to determine which dives he/she will do. For Black & Gold and B meets, the number of dives per age group is not required - we want divers to only do what they are capable/comfortable doing and coaches will help identify the divers with them.

Number of Dives by Age Group:

Age is determined by your diver's age as of June 1.

  • Freshman divers (Ages 10 & Under): 3 dives
  • Junior divers (Ages 11-12): 4 dives
  • Intermediate divers (Ages 13-14): 5 dives
  • Senior divers (Ages 15-18 yo): 6 dives

Dive Meet Order
The order of events at dive meets is:

  1. Warmups for each team (home team, then visiting team)
  2. National Anthem
  3. Freshman girls
  4. Freshman boys
  5. Junior girls
  6. Junior boys
  7. Intermediate girls
  8. Intermediate boys
  9. Senior girls
  10. Senior boys

Depending on the number of competitors, we may combine boys/girls or age groups. The Meet Secretary from the home team will discuss with the team reps and referee to determine if this will be the case.

There are often times we give the age groups "a bounce," which is a quick warmup right before their age group is about to dive.

Before an age/gender group dives, the announcer will announce the dive order. For the order, we usually alternate between the home team and visiting team. Home team usually has the first diver in each age/gender group.

Each diver performs one dive and then their next dive will take place after all the divers have performed their first dive. We loop through the dive order again until each diver has completed their specified dives.

Dive Description and Scoring
When each diver is announced, the announcer will say the name of the diver, the number/position of the dive, describe the dive that will be performed, and will say a number which corresponds to the "degree of difficulty" that serves as a "multiplier" for the scores. For example, if you hear the announcer say, "John Smith, 101B Forward Dive Pike, 1.3" - that means John Smith is going to do a forward dive in a pike position and that the degree of difficulty is 1.3. If the scores from the 5 judges for John Smith's dive are 3.5, 3.0, 4.0, 3.5, 4.5; the table workers will drop the highest and lowest scores (in this case drop the 3.0 and the 4.5), sum the remaining scores (3.5+4.0+3.5 = 11) and then multiply the 1.3 degree of difficulty to get a final score for that dive of 14.3. John Smith's final score for the meet would be the total scores of each of his dives.

After each diver has completed all of their dives, they can grab a popsicle (provided at Home meets) and relax and support the rest of their teammates.

For Tuesday A meets, the top 3 scores earn points for their respective teams. The diver within a gender/age group with the highest scores overall earns 5 points, the second place diver 3 points, and the third place finisher earns 1 point for their team. The team with the highest overall points across all age groups/genders for the meet wins. Black & Gold and B meets are not formally scored with respect to ordinal placements.
